Stump Grinding

Stump Grinding

Turn unsightly stumps into usable yard space with our specialized equipment.

Leftover stumps are more than just eyesores—they attract termites and complicate landscaping in Charlotte’s dense neighborhoods. Our carbide-tipped grinders make quick work of even the toughest stumps, whether it’s a 30-inch maple in Huntersville or a cluster of sweetgums in Gastonia.

We adjust grinding depth based on your future plans. For replanting, we’ll go 6 inches deep and backfill with fresh soil. If you’re installing a patio or driveway (common in South End’s redevelopments), we’ll grind 12+ inches and compact the area.

Red clay soil requires special attention during grinding to prevent erosion. We always hydroseed or straw bare areas to stabilize the ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you grind a stump close to my house?

Yes—our compact grinders work within 12 inches of foundations, common in older Myers Park properties. We manually remove any remaining root flares.

What happens to the wood chips?

We haul them away unless you request chips for landscaping. Many Matthews clients use them for garden pathways.
